Wang makes last start memorable as Nats roll
WASHINGTON -- The Nationals played spoiler on Saturday afternoon, taking a 4-1 decision over the Braves at Nationals Park. Atlanta fell to two games ahead of St. Louis in the National League Wild Card race after the Cardinals walked off against the Cubs earlier in the day.
Nationals right-hander Chien-Ming Wang pitched his last game of the season, and he proved once again that his shoulder problems are a thing of the past. He lasted six innings and allowed one run on four hits.
His one blemish was a home run by Freddie Freeman in the fifth inning. After that, Wang retired the final six hitters he faced. To Freeman, the Braves saw a different Wang than the one they saw on Aug. 3 and Sept. 1., when he allowed a combined 10 runs -- six earned -- in 10 2/3 innings.
"He was doing something right out there," Freeman said. "We couldn't figure him out. He had that backdoor cutter working the first time around that Chipper [Jones] and I both struck out on. That's a pitch he didn't throw us before. He mixed it up well today."
Nationals second baseman Danny Espinosa raved about how great it was to play behind Wang.
"He works quickly and he knows what he is going to do," Espinosa said. "When he has such a good plan like that, you stay active in case a ground ball [comes your way]. It keeps you in the game."
Manager Davey Johnson is still amazed that Wang was able to make a great comeback. It took Wang two years to recover from a serious shoulder injury. Johnson saw Wang throw in the instructional league last offseason, and it appeared that Wang had problems.
"I'll tell you, just a remarkable season," Johnson said. "He got better every time out. I was actually nervous after the sixth inning. I knew he could continue. He was throwing that good. As far as I was concerned, I just wanted to shake his hand. I didn't want to go out and get him. What a great comeback. Great game. He is making steady progress. The best has yet to come. Remarkable effort.
"If you'd seen him throw in December, and where he is right now, my hat goes off to him. He worked hard. He is a dominant pitcher."
Wang went 4-3 with a 4.04 ERA in 11 starts in a season he wished wasn't ending so soon.
"As many outings I get, I feel my shoulder is stronger, the breaking ball is coming back," Wang said. "I'm looking forward to doing it."
Johnson made it clear that he wanted Wang back next season. The Nationals are in the preliminary stages of getting a deal done with the free-agent-to-be.
"There is no doubt about it," Johnson said. "If I'm here, he could have my salary."
Although he has accomplished a lot this year, Wang wants to get even better for next year.
"I'll try to work on my breaking ball more and hopefully get better and better again," Wang said. "Every year, we have to deal with different conditions. I hope I can have a really good year, get all my good stuff and keep myself at the best condition. I want to do my best in the future."
It was all Nationals (77-80) throughout Saturday's game. Braves (89-69) right-hander Brandon Beachy allowed an RBI single to Chris Marrero in the second inning.
Two innings later, Ryan Zimmerman and Jayson Werth came home on a single by Danny Espinosa to make it a 3-0 game. Espinosa scored on a single down the right-field line by Wang -- his first career big league hit after 32 at-bats. Wang plans to put the souvenir ball in his living room.
"I had a bad record before," Wang said. "All I wanted to do was just swing the bat, make contact, and I was kind of lucky. It was a line drive."
